Kress was born in Nuremberg Germany and trained as a linguist in Australia and London under MAK Halliday. He is mainly known for his contributions to the study of Multimodality; he wrote with Theo van Leeuwen Reading Images: The Grammar of Visual Design, one of the most Gunther Kress, one of the key figures in the forging of social semiotics, as well being one of the definers of multimodality studies, has died. Born in 1940 in Germany, Kress’ family moved to Australia where, on leaving school, he pursued a career as a furrier.
