PLAY. Synthesis of Leukotrienes •Leukotrienes are synthesized from arachidonic acid, a fatty acid found in membrane phospholipids-Arachidonic acid is released from phospholipids by phospholipase A2 Several studies have shown that the anti-leukotriene drugs diminish the bronchoconstrictor response in patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma. Steroid sparing effect In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 79 patients with asthma requiring inhaled beclomethasone (1500 microgram daily or more), the inhaled dose of beclomethasone dipropionate was halved. Anti-leukotrienes, including montelukast (Singulair), are administered orally and offer a potential significant advantage over inhaled medications in the pediatric population.8 First introduced in 1996, anti-leukotrienes were the first new class of asthma medication in two decades.
Anti-leukotrienes belong to the first new class of anti-asthma drugs to be intro-duced for over 30 years and have there-fore attracted enormous interest among the clinical community. Asthma is a global disease problem and has be-come the most common chronic dis-ease in industrialized countries. Anti-leukotrienes aredrugs that block the Anti-leukotrienes and ICS also improved lung function and asthma control. However, we are not sure whether the combination of anti-leukotrienes and ICS is superior to higher-dose ICS. Limited available evidence does not support use of anti-leukotrienes as a way to decrease ICS dose. Fingerprint Dive into the research topics of 'Anti-leukotrienes for asthma'.

Addition of anti-leukotriene agents to inhaled corticosteroids for antileukotrienes when added to corticosteroid in chronic asthma.
Cysteinyl leukotrienes (cLTs) contribute to the pathogenesis of asthma and other allergic disorders, and participate in the development of airway inflammation 1., 2•.. In the past 5 years, the advent of drugs that interfere with the production or action of cLTs has led to important changes in asthma management [3••] . Leukotriene-receptor antagonists, such as montelukast and zafirlukast, prevent leukotrienes from binding to their receptors Leukotriene synthesis inhibitors, such as zileuton, block the enzyme, 5-lipoxygenase, which is necessary for the formation of leukotrienes. Montelukast, zafirlukast, and zileuton may be considered for the treatment of asthma. And for people with allergies, anti-histamines play a key role in alleviating symptoms. But for people with asthma, important mediators include prostaglandin D 2, platelet activating factor, leukotrienes and other chemicals involved in inflammation. The mediators that may play the most critical role are leukotrienes.
